We all like to think we are professionals, but perhaps, we need to examine our professionalism and ourselves more in depth. Unquestionably, we all could use some improvement; maybe, this outline will spark some ways in which you might improve. If so, you are resourceful enough to know where to get information or support in making those improvements – maybe, through your colleagues, mentors, or local association, using books and seminars as additional tools.

Are you Ethical in all your actions and communications?

Do you know the Rules of Professional Responsibility?

  • Confidentiality
  • Conflict of Interest
  • Competence and diligence
  • Unauthorized Practice of law
  • Fee splitting

Are you honest?

  • With your employer?
  • With the clients?

Do you have the Skills and Education to do the Job?

  • Communication Skills
    • Professional speech
    • No emotional outbursts
  • Are you Articulate?
    • Use of proper Terminology
    • Proper pronunciation
  • Superior Writing Skills
    • Ability to persuade
    • Clear concise writing
  • Computer Skills (according to your job duties)
    • Word processing software, either Microsoft Word® or WordPerfect®
    • Excel or other spreadsheet software
    • Database Management software
    • Billing Software
  • Do you have the Knowledge for your Specialty?
  • What formal education do you have in your area of law?
  • Do you ask questions of your employer attorney, colleagues, mentors, and at seminars?
  • Do you read books that will help you improve in your job?

Continuing Your Education

  • Join your local paralegal association
  • Attend seminars for CLE credit

Personal Appearance

  • Each day before you leave for work ask yourself if you look professional
  • Clothes clean, pressed, professional, and modest
  • Hair and nails clean and nea
Work Ethic
  • Give your firm the time they pay you for
  • Be efficient and capable
  • Have a good positive attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to get the Job done
  • Learn to deal with difficult people
